Some recent reviews and feedback of new renaissance lutes and repair/refurbishments.

A 7 course lute in marcassar ebony for professional guitarist and educator Colin Speight:

“Hi Luke, just to let you know that I am in love with this Lute, it is resonant and loud without being too brash, I find it very responsive and can coax a sweet sound from it when needs be. I have yet to use it in an ensemble situation but will let you know when I have."

A 6 course lute in beech and box made for lutenist Eric Thomas:

“I am delighted with the craftsmanship found in Luke's work. Having played previous lutes that Luke has made I decided to commission my own, and I am very pleased I did, he has made a lute with a clear warm sound in all registers, as well as being beautiful. I am looking forward to playing this lute for many years to come!"

Eric uploaded a video of him playing Spinacino recercare no. 9

A 6 course lute in Cherry for Christopher Jupp:

“I have already had many hours of pleasure playing through some cinquecento repertoire. I am really enjoying playing the 6c and it seems to be good for my playing too. It was commended at the Scottish Lute Society meeting here on Saturday (including by Rob Mackillop who played it) and also by Yashuhiro who spent several hours on it in the evening."

Repair and refurbishment of an 8c lute:

“I recently had the good fortune to have Luke Emmet of "Orlando Lutes" work on a lack lustre entry level lute I had purchased from another provider. Luke performed his modifications and the tone improved greatly. To be honest, initially I didn't know what to expect but the results far exceeded my expectations. Now I'm really enjoying my lute. Moreover, Luke was a pleasure to deal with - everything was made clear and always straightforward and friendly. I highly recommend his services."

7 course lute in figured sycamore and clouded ebony. This lute was made for the lutenist and early music director Zak Ozmo.

“I was delighted and impressed by how good this instrument is in every respect: the warm, full sound is well balanced across the registers, the projection is powerful, the instrument is very comfortable to play, and the craftsmanship is remarkable. Luke is clearly at the forefront of the younger generation of lute makers, and I can recommend his instruments without a reservation."

“Sensitive to the touch with a warm and full sound, I cannot recommend highly enough the instruments made by Luke Emmet at Orlando Lutes. These quality instruments will impress professionals and amateurs alike."
